Learning to Lead Through Opportunities

Learning to Lead Through Opportunities

Two weeks ago we launched the “Learning to Lead Through Opportunities” program for managers from across the college, a collaborative project the CTL is doing with Human Resources. Marzena Bugaj has worked closely with Bonnie Brown in HR to plan and organize this program and we are very excited about this new endeavor at the Center. Twenty-one LaGuardians who supervise front-line staff from all divisions will meet once per week for the next 6 weeks. Seminar sessions will focus on:

  • methods for building teamwork and trust
  • communicating effectively
  • staying focused on both opportunities and the core College mission

President Mellow kicked off the initial meeting of the program on the morning April 14 in E-501, which featured an excellent session led by Student Affairs VP Michael Baston. Dr. Baston had participants work through an “emotional intelligence” self-assessment, which became part of a great discussion later on about the meaning of “opportunity” at LaGuardia. There are people in the group whose growth started when they were LaGuardia students. They spoke about how they’re now in a position to help current students, just as they were helped. It was a pretty cool conversation, and it suggested to everyone that the effort of sharing knowledge and experience promises to bring participants a big “return on investment” as they discover how to advance themselves, their staff, and the College’s core mission.
